Growth Areas In The North-East

The North Eastern part of Singapore is set to don a whole set of fabric! With the government’s crusade of decentralization, major regional centers within the island nation will be a part of our lives – where we live, work and play within a much concentrated enclave. There will be more offices, jobs, recreational facilities, industrial
parks, schools and retail outlets built very near to homes. Residents literally get on with their lives in a city within a city state. Convenience will truly be redefined with the emergence of Regional Centers!

Seletar Aerospace Park

Occupying a large land space of 320ha (roughly the equivalent of 425 football fields combined), is Seletar Aerospace Park (SAP). It is essentially a zone dedicated to the aviation industry, ranging from maintenance and upgrade works to R and D facilities. A spin-off effect will be the emergence of related or supporting businesses within SAP or in the vicinity. More jobs are thus made available for the residents in this region.

As of now, close to 20,000 skilled workers have been employed during the initial Phases 1 and 2 while Phase 3 will see more skilled human resource needed once the facilities are up and running.

3 big global aviation players are already operating out SAP currently – ST Aero, Rolls-Royce and Eurocopter.

Punggol Creative Cluster and Learning Corridor

Punggol is set to be transformed into a “brain” hub. With the introduction of the North Coast Innovation Corridor, Punggol will take on the role of a Creative Cluster – a platform for innovations, and thus giving birth more to more demand for creative brains.

A Learning Corridor is also to be created, with a new tertiary institution coming up to function as a springboard for growth; and fuse the community into industries seamlessly.

Lorong Halus Industrial Park

Lorong Halus, once a lethargic wasteland, will be developed into a New Generation Industrial Park. The overall design will incorporate greenery, breathing a fresh new life into the entire outfit making the workplace “un-industrial”, departing from its cousins of past era. Recreational facilities, swanky pedestrian walkways and traffic will line the roads, livening up the environment for a whole new living experience!

Defu Industrial Park

Built in the early- to mid-80s, it is time to reinvent this zone. The mostly low level workshops and factories will make way for facilities and facets to keep up with modern needs. As part of the Defu Master Plan, the old name Defu Industrial Estate will be renamed Defu Industrial Park, adhering to the vision of “A Green and Sustainable Industrial Park of Tomorrow”.

With a bold and visionary plan spanning between 15 to 20 years, the redevelopment will take 3 phases. In Dec 2012, announcement was made to relocate more than 100 land-based factories to new complexes in Defu and Bedok. Currently in the design stage, both complexes are estimated be completed before 2020.

Subsequent to the above, plans are in the pipeline to redevelop the remaining parcel of the industrial estate over the next 5 to 10 years. While awaiting confirmation from the HDB to firm up their details, current occupants will enjoy continuing their tenancy for up to 3-year contracts.

Serangoon Sub-Regional Centre

As the term implies, Serangoon will be a sub-regional center within the North Eastern region. The creation of more offices and commercial outfits will invariably provide more employment opportunities outside the city for residents.

Paya Lebar Commercial Hub

Paya Lebar Central has about 500,000 square metres or approximately 12 hectares of commercial space set aside for retail, office and hotel development. This is part of the government’s decentralization effort to bring jobs and businesses closer to people’s homes.
