Bigger homes are being suggested in the midst of the new urban normal. Ideas of including co-working spaces in public libraries have been considered too.
Are our current residential layouts and sizes suitable as a home in times of crisis or for new working and living patterns?
As Singapore population ages, housing towns and neighbourhoods need to be self-sufficient with good connectivity.
Building bigger homes could be one idea to up the space in houses but this will increase cost of homes and affect housing affordability. In the short-term, there is a need to look for flexible solutions to work with existing resources in the housing estates at lower costs.
Hence came the possible ideas of using public libraries and residents committee centres (RCC) to become co-working spaces. This originates from the popularity and demand of co-working spaces mostly located in the central business district and regional centres.
However, whatever plans that come out of the ideas need to take into account the flexibility to change as and when the need arises. It is not easy to predict how situations and change in lifestyles will be like after this pandemic.
