The 6 MRT stations are at Jurong Lake District (CR19), West Coast (CR18), Clementi (CR17), Maju (CR16), King Albert Park (CR15) and Turf City (CR14). Next year (2023), construction work will start and completion is expected to be a decade later, in 2032.
With this Cross Island Line (CRL) phase 2, commuters will have greater transport accessibility in the Sunset Way and West Coast Road areas benefitting forty thousand households. This will make for quicker access from West to East to the North-eastern parts of the island.
The CRL is the 8th MRT line in Singapore and it will connect with many interchanges to accommodate convenient transfers onto other lines. It has a great impact on travelling time by allowing faster and more direct commutes. Journeys from the northeast to the west can be direct via the rail compared to the current rail and bus.
The authorities said they plan to acquire three private land plots for the construction of phase 2 of the CRL. In addition to the 2 industrial units owned by Jurong Town Corporation in Block L Pandan Loop Industrial Estate, there is a subterranean space located underneath the parking area of the Casa Esperanza condo.
The fully underground 50-km long CRL was planned in 2013 to come in 3 phases. It will link Tuas to Changi via major hubs like the Jurong Lake District and the Punggol Digital District.
By 2030, the first phase of the line consisting of 29 km in distance will open, connecting 12 MRT stations from Aviation Park in Changi with Bright Hill in Sin Ming.
Pasir Ris to Punggol will also be served by 7.3 km of CRL. Once operational in 2032, the four-station extension will serve over forty thousand households.
This advent of the CRL will definitely make the trains less crowded and in times of breakdown of certain MRT lines, the other lines can lessen the impact of this inconvenience when commuters can switch to other lines for their continuing journeys towards their destination.
A 13 km long CRL phase three, which will serve the Jurong Industrial Estate, is still going through engineering studies. It will comprise minimum 4 stations which are inclusive of 2 interchanges.
To service the new line, an integrated train and bus terminal will also be built in Tuas.
